1. Understanding the Fat-Free Mass Index (FFMI)

The **Fat-Free Mass Index (FFMI)** is a body composition metric that measures your lean muscle mass relative to your height. Unlike total body weight, which includes both muscle and fat, FFMI focuses exclusively on fat-free tissue (muscle, bone, organs, and water).

FFMI is calculated using your weight, height, and body fat percentage: **Lean Mass (kg) = Weight (kg) × (1 - Body Fat% / 100)**, and **FFMI = Lean Mass (kg) / Height (m)²**. 2. Why FFMI Tracks Muscle Better Than BMI

Standard BMI only accounts for total weight and height. Because of this, it often classifies highly muscular individuals (like bodybuilders or strength athletes) as "overweight" or "obese," despite having low body fat levels.

3. The Natural Genetic Muscular Limits

Studies of elite athletes suggest there is a natural limit to how much muscle mass the human body can build without chemical assistance. For men, a Normalized FFMI of **25.0** is generally considered the upper limit of natural muscle building, though rare genetic outliers may exceed this slightly.

The standard Normalized FFMI classifications for men are: Under 18 (below average), 18-20 (average), 20-22 (above average), 22-25 (highly muscular), and >25 (potential steroid use or rare genetic outlier). Classifications for women are slightly lower due to biological differences in body composition.
