1. Sizing Standards and Silhouette Classifications

Your body shape is determined by the proportions of your bust, waist, and hip circumferences. Sizing standards categorize female body shapes into several distinct silhouettes based on these ratios.

While body shape is largely determined by genetics (bone structure and natural fat distribution patterns), physical training and nutrition can help alter body composition to support recomposition goals.

2. Standard Body Shapes Defined

Our calculator classifies silhouettes into the following standard shapes based on proportion ratios:

  • Hourglass: Bust and hips are relatively balanced, with a defined waist.
  • Pear (Triangle): Hips are wider than the bust and shoulders.
  • Inverted Triangle: Bust and shoulders are broader than the hips.
  • Rectangle: Bust, waist, and hips are relatively straight and balanced.
  • Spoon: Hips are wider than the bust, with a defined shelf-like waist.
  • Apple (Oval): Fat is stored primarily around the midsection.

3. Customizing Your Fitness Strategy by Silhouette

Different body shapes can benefit from targeted training strategies to support balanced proportions:

  • Inverted Triangle (Athletic): Focus on lower-body exercises (e.g. squats, lunges) to build leg mass and balance broader shoulders.
  • Pear Shape: Incorporate upper-body exercises (e.g. shoulder presses, lateral raises) to balance wider hips.
  • Apple Shape: Prioritize cardiovascular training and a moderate calorie deficit to support abdominal fat loss. Calculate your target deficit using our Weight Loss Calculator.

4. Muscle Recomposition and Lean Mass

To support body recomposition, focus on building lean muscle mass while losing fat. This helps improve metabolic rate and supports a healthy body composition. Track your body composition changes using our Body Fat Calculator and monitor your lean tissue using our Lean Body Mass Calculator.
