TDEE stands for **Total Daily Energy Expenditure**. It represents the total number of calories your body burns in a 24-hour period. Understanding your TDEE is critical for managing weight, as it represents the baseline calorie intake needed to maintain your current weight.

The Four Components of TDEE

Your daily energy expenditure is composed of four main physiological components:

  • Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR): The energy required to support basic life functions at rest (approx. 60–70% of TDEE).
  • Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT): The energy burned through daily movements that are not planned exercise (approx. 15–20% of TDEE).
  • Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (EAT): The energy burned during structured physical activity and workouts (approx. 5–10% of TDEE).
  • Thermic Effect of Food (TEF): The energy required to digest and process nutrients (approx. 10% of TDEE).

Calculating and Using Your TDEE

To estimate your TDEE, you first calculate your BMR using a standard formula (like Mifflin-St Jeor) and then multiply it by an activity factor based on your physical movement levels.
